Summit to highlight biogas contribution towards global sustainable economic development and climate change mitigation
Debates will emphasise how the industry helps secure energy security away from fossil gas and reduce the impact of global warming.
World Biogas Summit 2025 – 9-10 July, Birmingham, UK
The World Biogas Summit 2025, organised by the World Biogas Association (WBA) at the NEC in Birmingham on 9-10 July will once again highlight how the anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas industry can contribute towards energy, food and climate security, the development of circular economies and the achievement of Net Zero targets worldwide.
Around the theme “From Waste to Wealth: powering economics, protecting nature”, the two-day thought-leadership forum uniquely dedicated to AD and biogas will in particular showcase the leadership of France in successfully deploying “methanisation” across vast and diverse regional landscapes , and the strides accomplished in Latin America, notably in Mexico and Brazil – the latter with the implementation of WBA’s Making Biogas Happen programme through a memorandum of understanding recently signed with the State Government of São Paulo. The latest International Energy Agency’s report on biogas and biomethane, which illustrates the growing contribution made by the industry in supporting the development of a green global economy, will also underpin the discussions.
Speakers featuring on the programme include Dan Jørgensen, European Commissioner for Energy, European Commission Directorate-General for Energy, Jean-Luc Fugit, President of the French Higher Council for Energy, Martina Otto, Head of Secretariat, Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), Dr Peter Zeniewski, Senior Energy Analyst, International Energy Agency (IEA), Riccardo Savigliano, Chief – Energy Systems and Industrial Decarbonisation Unit, UNIDO, Dr Abel Clemente Reyes, President of the Mexican Association for Biomass and Biogas, Annette McKenzie, Mayor of Solihull, Mathieu de Carvalho, Regulation and Public Affairs Senior Manager, TotalEnergies Biogaz and Chris Huhne, Chair, ADBA, and former UK Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. They will participate alongside senior WBA representatives Charlotte Morton OBE, Chief Executive, and Dr Pradeep Monga, Director of Policy and Senior Advisor.
“In its recently released second Outlook for Biogas and Biomethane report, the International Energy Agency indicates that biomethane could meet up to 25% of global natural gas demand using readily available sustainable feedstock alone”, commented Charlotte Morton OBE, WBA Chief Executive. “This is the kind of forecast that demonstrates how significant our sector can become in supporting the global economy at a time of great geopolitical uncertainty. The World Biogas Summit is where the key players will gather to drive forward the development of biogas worldwide and help #MakeBiogasHappen. It’s a critical game-changing event that we’re proud to host and that shouldn’t be missed by anyone interested in ensuring global energy, food and climate security for the decades to come”.
The World Biogas Summit will be co-located with the World Biogas Expo, organised by WBA in partnership with the UK Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) and which will provide delegates with an opportunity to hear about the latest industry trends, discover technological innovations and engage with over 150 exhibitors in the hall.
In the evening of 9th July, WBA and ADBA will also host the AD and Biogas Industry Awards Ceremony during which the winners of this year’s competition will be revealed. The prestigious event at the nearby Birmingham National Conference Centre, will be hosted by renowned comedian and impressionist Rory Bremner – expect a night of celebration and fun not to be missed!

Notes to editors:
- The World Biogas Summit was launched by WBA in 2019 as the only global thought-leadership forum dedicated to anaerobic digestion and biogas. Now in its fifth year, it brings together industry leaders, policy-makers other agenda-setting speakers from around the world to discuss the role of AD and biogas in addressing climate change and other global environmental and societal challenges.
- Past Summits welcomed: UNFCCC Manager Niclas Svenningsen, former French Agriculture Minister and spokesperson for the Hollande government Stéphane Le Foll, White House Liaison for Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry Rick Duke, OECD Environment Director Jo Tyndall, US Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, International Energy Agency Deputy Executive Director Keisuke Samadori, Special Representative for Action on Methane at the Climate and Clean Air Coalition Drew Shindell, Goldman Sachs Vice-President Justin Goldstein, the World Bank’s Jennifer Sara, PepsiCo Climate Solutions Director Nicholas Jenks and representatives from the IPCC, UK Department for International Trade, Heineken, Credit Suisse and many others.
- Launched at COP22 in Marrakesh in 2016, the World Biogas Association is the global trade association for the biogas, landfill gas and anaerobic digestion (AD) sectors, and is dedicated to facilitating the recycling of all organic wastes, crop residues and break crops through biogas technologies such as anaerobic digestion (AD) globally. It believes that the global adoption of these technologies is a multi-faceted opportunity to produce clean, renewable energy, bioCO2, natural fertilisers and other valuable bioproducts while resolving global issues related to development, public health and economic growth. www.worldbiogasassociation.org
- WBA’s mission is to ensure that the 105bn tonnes of organic wastes produced every year by human activity are captured, treated and transformed through anaerobic digestion and complementary technologies into green gas, biofertilisers, bioC02, and other valuable bioproducts, thus:
- preventing 0.1degree temperature rise by preventing methane and other emissions of greenhouse gases
- reducing pollution of rivers and oceans
- helping prevent 3.7m deaths annually caused by burning traditional domestic fuels
- improving air quality, soil health and human health
- boosting energy and food security
- supporting biodiversity
- being part of a circular economy worth US$34tn
- creating 10 to 15 million new green jobs globally
- The WBA #MakingBiogasHappen Programme is a global initiative that equips governments, regulators and industry with the tools to overcome barriers and sustainably scale up anaerobic digestion solutions. It supports the development of thriving biogas sectors by establishing benchmarks for operational excellence, safety and sustainability. The programme includes two core initiatives:
- The Global Biogas Regulatory Framework (GBRF) – A ready-to-implement set of policies, regulations and standards designed to guide the rapid development of national biogas industries.
- The International Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme (ADCS International) – The world’s first global certification scheme for biogas plants, ensuring independently verified safety, environmental and operational performance.
