Denise Mulholland
Director of Secretariat, Global Methane Initiative
Denise has nearly thirty years of experience advancing energy efficiency, renewable energy, climate change and methane mitigation policies and measures at the international, national, and subnational levels. Her primary focus has been helping governments and industry collaborate, share best practices, conduct quantitative analyses, identify their optimum course(s)of action, and overcome barriers to success.
She is currently the Director of the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) Secretariat, hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In that role, she supports the overall strategy development, communication, and implementation of GMI – a public-private partnership devoted to methane management since 2004 – across 49 Partner Countries, 1000+ Project Network members, three technical subcommittees, the Steering Committee, and the Leadership Team. She also leads a team of methane experts at EPA, working internationally across multiple sectors, and serves as a Vice Chair on the Bureau of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Committee on Sustainable Energy. Prior to her current roles, she was at the UNECE as the Secretary of the Committee on Sustainable Energy, supporting 56 member States on sustainability, and previously served in numerous other leadership roles at U.S. EPA, creating and supporting initiatives, regulations, tools, analyses, and guidance that support climate change mitigation efforts by governments and industry.
She earned a Master of Economics from the University of Calgary in Canada and holds undergraduate degrees in economics and international relations from the University of Delaware in the U.S..
